Hungary - Western Transdanubia
After Budapest, Western Transdanubia is probably the most dynamic region of Hungary. Its proximity to Austria and its unique natural resources make it an ideal place for investment, tourism and retirement.
Western Transdanubia consists of the following 3 counties:
Each of the three counties has a common border with Austria.
Western Transdanubia - Thermal Spa Zalaegerszeg
Western Tansdanubia like its Austrian neighbours in Styria and Burgenland boasts and impressive number of spas.
There are the historic spas of Bük and Sárvár in Vas county, Balf near Sorpon, the Kehidakustány spa complex in Zala county, Lenti (close to Letenye near the Croatian border) and to top it all Zalaegerszeg - one finest and largest spas in the whole of Europe.
Transdanubia - Lake Balaton
The "Hungarian Sea", is the people's name for the 50-mile long lake with silky green-yellow water in the middle of Transdanubia.
It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations. The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the Sió is the only outflow.
Lake Balaton - Beach in Summer
Lake Balaton is relatively shallow. Its average depth is 3 m. On the southern shore the lake drops of very gradually – making it an ideal playground for younger children.
Because the lake has a large surface area and is rather shallow, the summer water temperature is around 26°C - 28°C (80°F - 82°F), which is warmer than the average air temperature in the mornings and evenings. Conversely, when temperatures drop in the winter Lake Balaton freezes over quite fast – creating a giant skating rink, usually about 20cm thick.

Two National parks protect the national beauties and rarities:
The Balaton Upland National park lies north of the lake.
The Kis (Small) Balaton National Park in the eastern corner of the lake is one the most precious wetlands in Europe.

Hungarian cuisine
Maybe you have already heard about delights of Hungarian cuisine. Traditional Hungarian dishes abound in piquant flavors and aromas.
Dishes are flavourful, spicy and often quite heavy. People with a sensitive stomach should be careful.
Flavours of Hungarian dishes are based on centuries old traditions in spicing and preparation methods. The exquisite ingredients are produced by local farmers.
Hungarian Goulash
A bit of Goulash History
Hungarian gulyás with goulash
The Hungarian word "gulyás" translates as Herdsman.
This is where the dish’s name comes from. Goulash was originally made in cast-iron kettle, hung above open fire, out in the Puszta (The Great Hungarian Plain).
Goulash only made it to the Hungarian townsfolk and nobility tables in the 19th century. From there it went to the tables of the Austrian aristocracy and in the 20th century arrived to British shores.
Rakott Krumpli
Layered Potatos
My favourite! Potato layered with csabai, a type of Hungarian sausage, hard-boiled eggs, onion, sour cream, breadcrumbs and, of course, paprika.
Western Transdanubian Wine
Production of slightly tannic reds is prevalent in the Western Transdanubian Wine Region. Wines made have strong characters.
Main varieties are Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, whites: Sauvignon Blanc, Királyleányka, Green veltelini.
The subalpine climate is favorable for producing late harvested sweet whites too.
Most important of all – the Hungarian word for “Cheers!” is:
Pronounce: EGE-SHEH'-GE-DRE (quite a mouthful after your second bottle!)
Balaton South Shore
Hungary is now a full member of the European Union and whilst all countries in Europe and around the world are facing difficulties of one sort or another, what we observe is that Hungary is developing quite rapidly.
Compare the low prices in Hungary with current prices in Spain or France. Don't you wish that you had bought property in Spain 20 years ago before prices rose? It's time to look east for your investment growth and widen your horizons. The holiday possibilities are endless too. Don't miss out on a growth market. This country is modernising very rapidly but there are still good property bargains to be had.
