Lovely renovation project near BALATON lake

Héviz

The town of Héviz is located just off the north western shore of Lake Balaton, in Mid-West Hungary, about 6km from the main town of Keszthely. Budapest is about two hours by car.

Balaton airport is nearby and offers seasonal flights from many destinations during the summer.. The famous town is surrounded by hills, enjoying a unique Mediterranean type climate, with many calm and sunny days.

Héviz Lake is a geological curiosity. Europe's largest natural thermal lake - a warm water lake situated in a peat-bed. The 4.44 ha water-surface lake is surrounded by a 60.5 ha nature conservation area. Springs of different temperatures diffuse through a narrow cave and became a constant (38,5 °C) when entering the lake.

Lovely water lilies, brought to Hungary at the end of the 19th century, are planted in the lake, and their leaves help to slow down evaporation. Creepers protect the medicinal mud on the bottom of the lake.

There are lots of hotels and lots of shops which make it a very interesting destination.

HUNGARY

This is a land with a very rich history and it has a great deal of culture. For those of you who are unaware it is a full member of the EU and seems to be becoming ever more prosperous.

"The great Hungarian plain" is the most common description. Millions of years ago it was below the waters of the Pannonian sea and is still said to have a Pannonian climate. There are vast forests and huge tracts of agricultural land with massive fields which are farmed very efficiently.

These days it is a modern, thriving democracy. Driving through most parts of the country there are newly developed industrial estates everywhere and the UK based Tesco supermarkets are to be found in most towns. In other words it is just like most other modern countries. Yes, there are still some poor areas and there are still some gypsy villages but in general the country looks good.

Hungarian food is spicy and wholesome and you will never leave a local restaurant hungry. Portions are generous and quite a challenge.

Wine growing is big business although you may not know it. Look up the Egri and Kunsági wine growing regions and Villány- a red wine growing area on the Serbian border. Egri Bikavér (Bulls Blood) is surely their most famous brand. See . . .

Hungary makes a great holiday destination. Budapest is worth a visit and the largest lake in Europe - lake Balaton - is a wonderful summer playground. Hungary offers, stately homes, castles and a huge number of hot water spas throughout the country. Prices are still low and many good, drinkable wines can be bought in the supermarkets for 300 - 400HUF i.e. between one and four Euros.

If you haven't been then you are missing out.
